Walnut Capital is ready to start building a new 10-story building on its Bakery Square Connector site along Penn Avenue in the East End now that the development firm has received $5 million from the administration of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.
The new building, on the site of the former Club One Health Club, is expected to be the first project in an $850 million redevelopment of the 14-acre master plan. The project will include about 400 apartments, with 15% available at affordable rates, and some first floor retail space. It will stretch from the original Bakery Square to the East Liberty Target store, for which Walnut Capital received approval from the Pittsburgh Planning Commission for the master plan for a dense new mixed-use community in September.
