Embracing Juneteenth: Meaningful Ways You Can Celebrate

Text Block 1

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a significant holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and triumphs achieved. Walnut Capital is celebrating with paid time-off and we encourage our employees and community to honor this day to help promote inclusivity and foster a sense of unity. Here are some ways you can celebrate Juneteenth:

Educate Yourself and Others

Take some time to deepen your understanding of Juneteenth. Read books, articles, or watch documentaries that explore African American history and the significance of Juneteenth. Share your newfound knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues, fostering dialogue and awareness.

Support Black-Owned Businesses

Make a conscious effort to support Black-owned businesses on Juneteenth. Purchase goods or services from local Black-owned establishments, dine at Black-owned restaurants, or explore online marketplaces featuring Black entrepreneurs. By doing so, you contribute to economic empowerment and highlight the value of their contributions. Here are some black-owned businesses you can visit within the Pittsburgh region!

Attend Local Juneteenth Events

Find local Juneteenth events in your community and attend them. These events often include parades, festivals, educational programs, and cultural performances. Participate in activities that celebrate African American history and culture while connecting with others who share your commitment to equality. Check out our June Events blog to see how we are celebrating around the city!

Attend or Host a Film-Screening or Discussion

Choose a thought-provoking film that explores African American history or tells stories of resilience and triumph. Organize a virtual or in-person film screening with friends and family followed by a discussion session. This allows participants to reflect on the past, consider present challenges, and discuss ways to foster a more equitable future. Streaming Services like Hulu and Netflix have plenty of movies and shows to celebrate this holiday weekend. Here are some recommendations:

Volunteer for a Community Service Project

Juneteenth is an ideal time to give back to the community. Look for volunteer opportunities that support organizations working toward racial equality or those serving underprivileged communities. Dedicate your time to initiatives that promote social justice, education, or economic empowerment. Organizations to volunteer and support below:

Engage in Self Reflection and Journaling

Take time to reflect on your personal journey toward racial understanding and growth. Journal your thoughts, feelings, and insights gained from learning about Juneteenth. Challenge yourself to identify areas where you can make a positive impact, both in your personal life and in society.

Amplify African American Voices

Use your platform, whether it's on social media or within your friend group, to amplify African American voices. Share stories, articles, or artwork created by Black individuals that celebrate their culture, history, or achievements. Encourage dialogue and understanding by engaging in meaningful conversations.

Celebrating Juneteenth provides an opportunity for personal growth, community engagement, and fostering a more inclusive society. By educating ourselves, supporting Black-owned businesses, attending events, and promoting dialogue, we can honor the significance of Juneteenth and contribute to the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
