Dylan traded in homework for tool belts in middle school, diving headfirst into the world of roofing alongside his cousin each summer. He was introduced to the property management industry through his mom who used to be a property manager. They lived at the apartment she managed and he got to hang out with her maintenance crew from time to time, which sparked his knack for fixing things.
Fast forward to graduating high school, and Dylan landed a job at a property as a maintenance tech. Transitioning from roofing to maintenance was a challenge but he quickly learned how to fix (basically) everything. During the switch, he was fueled by his grandfather's mantra, 'always be learning,' a saying he has followed throughout his life.
As time went on, he wanted a change and was ready to take on a a new property with new challenges. His mom found a Walnut Capital job opening and sent it his way. The interview was the tell-all that Walnut was the place for him. He learned that many of our maintenance crew had been with us for 15-plus years, some nearing 20, and thought,
You guys must be doing something right.
Since joining the Walnut Capital crew, Dylan has become one of our go-to guys for all things maintenance at our city properties. He and our painter, John, have been on a mission to transform the way we handle repairs and renovations, such as painting tubs in-house and minimizing the need for contractors. Besides helping Walnut grow, he ensures that our properties stay clean, prioritizes work orders, handles turnovers, and lends a hand when other techs need it.
Off the clock, Dylan enjoys relaxing with his dogs and his girlfriend in the comfort of their home, which they've worked on together over the past few years. He also loves spending time with his nephews and niece, who he's lowkey obsessed with, but we can't blame him because they are adorable.
Once the lead singer of a band with a couple of our painters, who he also recruited to work at Walnut, Dylan traded the stage for fixing up his house and spending time with his family. And he wouldn't have it any other way.
While he couldn't pinpoint a single favorite memory at Walnut, Dylan looks forward to move-ins at University Commons each summer. The camaraderie among the maintenance crew and the arrival of Carlie with a case of beer make it undeniably one of his favorite times of the year. Walnut Capital feels less like a workplace and more like a second family to him.
I’ve felt uncomfortable my whole life and never felt uncomfortable at Walnut. Walnut’s cool.
In recent months, Dylan's dedication has been recognized with a promotion to Assistant Maintenance Supervisor—an accomplishment that comes as no surprise. Here’s to many more years of tackling repairs together!
