Walnut Capital Employee Spotlight: Gwen Sparkman

We are thrilled to have a new addition to our team at Walnut Capital for our upcoming Southside apartment property, Hot Metal Flats! Beginning as a leasing intern over the summer, Gwen Sparkman quickly excelled in Resident Managing. Working along side Courtney Dressler at Walnut on Highland in East Liberty, she picked up all the ins and outs of leasing, and we are sure she will shine as the Resident Manager of Hot Metal Flats next summer!

Majoring in Economics and Business, Gwen has always been interested in pursuing a career in real estate development. She completed a research project through the University of Pittsburgh last spring, spending time in New York City studying the real estate market in Williamsburg Brooklyn. She even recently found out that her research paper will be published in Forbes and Fifth, the Pitt School of Arts & Sciences undergrad research journal! Upon coming back to Pittsburgh, she applied to work at what she believed the most “professional and established” real estate company in the city. She quickly moved up from intern to Assistant Resident Manager, making her the perfect choice to run our newest property! When asked what her favorite thing about the Hot Metal Flats is, she quickly answered,

“Hot Metal Flats has the best location! It couldn’t be better. You are close to the parkway and Oakland, making it easy for most commutes to work. The Southside Works are just steps away, and you are right next to the action of East Carson without it being overwhelming”

She is gearing up to get started after the holidays, with pre-leasing for Hot Metal beginning in mid-January. We are thrilled to have her with us here in the leasing family at Walnut Capital!

Where are you from?

South Jersey, right outside of Philly.

What is the most interesting thing you have ever done?

I once got to take a turn flying a plane around the Delaware River Gap! Definitely the most exhilarating thing I have done!

What is your favorite Pittsburgh restaurant?

BRGR in East Liberty, I love their Fire in the Hole Burger!

Where do you like to shop?

Southside Works or Walnut Street. H&M and J-Crew are my favorite stores.

What do you like to do on the weekends?

Go to brunch!

Where is your favorite brunch joint?

Harris Grill in Shadyside.

What do you love about Pittsburgh?

It is a great place to live and work as a young adult.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Manhattan…the vibe there is unbeatable.


Hot Metal Flats (the Flats) will be the only multi-family, Class A luxury apartment building in the South Side Works section of Pittsburgh, with an integral parking garage that provides for enhanced building security. The Flats will provide a mixture of 1- bedroom, 2-bedroom and Studio urban style apartments ranging from 550 sq. ft. for Studio Apartments, to an average of 700 sq. ft. for 1- bedroom, up to a 2-bedroom unit featuring 1,280 sq. ft. Interior features include 8-foot ceilings, walk in closets, granite finishes with island kitchens in varying units, and hardwood type flooring. The Flats are also a pet friendly facility and will have a Mudroom for the animals. The Flats will feature units with views of the City, river, and/or South Side Slopes and will be the most bike friendly residential development in the City, with 68 individual bike storage stations, a bike repair shop, a bike cleaning area and direct access to the River Trail.

Other external features will be ECV stations, ZIP car parking location, exterior lighting and public art project highlighting the transformation of the area from industrial to a Live, Work Play environment. Amenities include a fitness center, an oversized private lounge/bar area with direct access to an outdoor sun and grill deck & grilling area, fire pits and heating systems for year round use.  The garage will have high tech security and lighting for residents, the facility will have free Wi FI, and all units will feature a private balcony or Juliette Balcony. Restaurants, retail venues, a movie theater, grocery store, and other service providers, as well as two hotels (HYATT house and Springhill Suites) are within walking distance.
